Micronutrients and nutrition in dentistry
Dear Patients,
A healthy mouth is always a reflection of a healthy body. In addition to oral hygiene and dental treatment, diet, micronutrients and lifestyle have a significant impact on the health of teeth, gums, bones and mucous membranes. At the Alpstein Clinic, our approach to biological and integrative dentistry takes these interrelationships into account and incorporates them into our treatment plan.
Why nutrition and micronutrients are so important
Why nutrition and micronutrients are so important
An optimal supply of nutrients supports numerous processes in the oral cavity.
These include, in particular:
- the stability of tooth structure and the prevention of tooth decay
- periodontal health and the treatment of periodontitis
- bone metabolism, for example in connection with implants or bone grafts
- wound healing of the gums and bone following surgical procedures
Nutrition and metabolism thus directly influence the tissue’s ability to regenerate.
An anti-inflammatory diet as a foundation
Our modern lifestyle presents the body with new challenges. Environmental stressors, chronic stress and highly processed foods can promote inflammatory processes and put a strain on the metabolism. An anti-inflammatory diet and the targeted supplementation of missing micronutrients can help to relieve the strain on the metabolism, the liver and the gut, and create favourable conditions for healing and regeneration.
Key principles include:
- a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet with healthy fats
- stable blood sugar regulation
- natural, high-quality foods
- a conscious choice of meals and meal frequency
Dr Kurt Mosetter’s Glycoplan, for example, can serve as a guide. In this guide, foods are classified according to their pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory properties.
Important micronutrients in dentistry
Omega-3 fatty acids
regulates calcium metabolism, strengthens the immune system and supports bone mineralisation as well as the healing of implants.
Vitamin D₃
regulates calcium metabolism, strengthens the immune system and supports bone mineralisation as well as the healing of implants.
Vitamin K₂
regulates calcium distribution in the body, thereby supporting the stability of bones and teeth as well as vascular health.
Magnesium
acts as a cofactor for numerous enzymes and supports the bone matrix, cell regeneration and the activation of vitamin D.
Zinc
plays an important role in wound healing, collagen formation and the health of mucous membranes.
Selenium
has an antioxidant effect, supports the immune system and detoxification processes, and can reduce oxidative stress.
Vitamin C
has an antioxidant effect, is essential for the formation of collagen in the gums, connective tissue and bones, and promotes wound healing.
B vitamins
support energy production, nerve function and the regeneration of mucous membranes.
Lifestyle as a factor in health
Alongside diet and micronutrients, lifestyle also plays a key role in the body’s ability to recover. The less stress, the better the body’s ability to regulate itself.
This includes:
- regular exercise and strength training
- stress management, for example through meditation or breathing techniques
- a healthy balance between activity and rest
- a consistent and adequate sleep pattern
Implementation at the Alpstein Clinic

This can be particularly beneficial in the following cases:
- Implantations
- Bone and soft tissue augmentation
- Extensive dental and jaw restoration
- Wisdom tooth extractions
- Cavitation surgery
- Periodontitis treatments
- Increased risk of caries
- Preventive dental and bone protection
