INUSpheresis® at Alpstein Clinic: Individual assessment, targeted treatment
INUSpheresis® is a specialised form of therapeutic apheresis, or blood plasma filtration. During the procedure, blood is processed outside the body and then returned to it. Following an individual medical assessment, Alpstein Clinic has used the procedure since 2020 as a potential component of an integrative medicine treatment plan.
We are one of the world’s most experienced INUSpheresis® centres.
Whether INUSpheresis® is suitable in your individual case depends on your symptoms, existing diagnoses, medical findings and general state of health. Our doctors will advise you on the treatment’s potential objectives, limitations and risks.

How does INUSpheresis® work?
INUSpheresis® is a specialised blood purification method in which certain burdening substances bound in the blood plasma are reduced through a filtration process. Depending on your personal issue and treatment objectives, we select the most appropriate system from a range of filter systems. INUSpheresis® is not a complete plasma exchange: we filter the plasma and then return it to the body together with the blood cells. Depending on the medical question, we may analyse components of the filtrate. The results support progress monitoring and the planning of further therapeutic steps. In this way, we combine diagnostics, treatment and follow-up care in an individual integrative medicine treatment plan.

1. Medical enquiry and documentation
You call us, send us your enquiry or submit the completed patient questionnaire. Existing medical reports, laboratory results and other relevant findings help our team make an initial assessment.
2. Medical assessment
During a personal consultation, we discuss your symptoms, medical history and the potential objectives and limitations of treatment. This consultation determines whether INUSpheresis® may be suitable for you.
3. Individual treatment planning
If the medical requirements are met, the attending doctor determines the next steps. These include the individual selection of the filter system and the planning of the treatment and accompanying measures. The clinic generally recommends two treatments within a few days. Depending on your progress and personal needs, repeating the treatment after three to twelve months may be appropriate.
4. Procedure and care
An experienced medical team supports you throughout the outpatient treatment, which lasts around two to three hours depending on your individual plasma volume. The blood ist generally withdrawn through a vein in the arm and returns it through a closed circuit. If venous access is difficult, the lines can be placed by the attending doctor under ultrasound guidance. Throughout the treatment, the team monitors your circulation, blood pressure and heart rhythm.
5. Follow-up consultation
After treatment, we discuss how the procedure went and the next steps with you. Depending on the medical question, we may analyse components of the filtrate. The results are incorporated into progress monitoring and further treatment planning. In this way, we coordinate diagnostics, treatment and follow-up care within your personal integrative medicine treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions about INUSpheresis®
INUSpheresis® is a form of therapeutic apheresis, or blood plasma filtration. Blood is taken out of the body, the plasma is treated using a filter system and the blood is then returned. At Alpstein Clinic, treatment is performed following an individual medical assessment. Depending on the patient’s health situation and treatment objectives, a decision is made as to whether the procedure is suitable and which filter system should be used.
“Blood cleansing” is a colloquial term for various procedures in which blood components are treated or filtered outside the body. With INUSpheresis®, the blood plasma is passed through a filter system. The treated blood components are then returned to the body. INUSpheresis® is not the same as dialysis or a complete plasma exchange.
Depending on individual plasma volume, the outpatient treatment generally takes around two to three hours. For the first treatment cycle, the clinic usually recommends two treatments within a few days. Depending on your progress and personal circumstances, repeating the treatment after three to twelve months may be appropriate.
Before treatment, our medical team assesses your health situation.
