Misalignmentof teeth and jaw
In a healthy set of teeth, all the structures in the mouth fit together perfectly to ensure smooth function without discomfort. However, the perfect set of teeth is very rare. Misaligned teeth or jaws are often caused by hereditary or developmental factors. In the case of malocclusion, one or more teeth in the upper or lower jaw are not in the ideal shape of the dental arch. This means that they are crooked or rotated. Sometimes the teeth do not grow out correctly or incompletely. If the jaw is misaligned, either the upper or lower jaw is not in the ideal shape. For example, the lower jaw is either smaller or larger than the upper jaw. Or the position of the upper and lower jaws in relation to each other is not correct. Misaligned jaws are usually associated with misaligned teeth.

The consequences of misalignment
The consequences of misalignment
Misalignment often leads to difficulties when chewing, speaking, swallowing and smiling. If the incisors do not meet properly, it can be difficult to bite down. The same applies if the food cannot be crushed sufficiently because the molars do not mesh like two cogwheels. Dental plaque forms easily in the recesses of crooked and teeth that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush. Tartar, caries and gingivitis can occur.
Misalignments of the jaw often lead to muscle tension in the temporomandibular joint, shoulder and neck area. Misaligned teeth or jaws can lead to headaches, concentration problems, jaw pain and premature wear of the temporomandibular joints.
Severe misalignment of the front teeth can also lead to speech disorders such as lisping. The pronunciation of S and Z sounds can also be impaired.
If the lips cannot be closed properly due to protruding incisors or a receding lower jaw, those affected breathe more through the mouth instead of the nose. This makes it easier for pathogens to enter the mouth and increases susceptibility to infections.
Measures against misaligned teeth and jawsTake preventive measures for your children
Numerous harmful habits can promote the occurrence of misaligned teeth or jaws. Here are some measures you can take from an early age:
- Make sure that your child does not suck their thumb for too long or too intensively. This causes the upper teeth to move forward and the lower teeth to move backwards.
- An open bite can make it difficult to bite off and speak later on.
- Constant sucking on feeding bottles can also lead to jaw misalignment in babies or toddlers.
- As parents, pay attention to your children's oral hygiene and dental care at an early stage. If a destroyed baby tooth is not extracted or falls out prematurely, neighboring teeth can move into the gap and take the place of the permanent teeth.
- Make sure that your child wears the braces regularly to prevent future misaligned teeth.
