When stress silently makes you ill – holistic ways out of exhaustion
Dear Patients,
Stress is omnipresent today and is considered ‘normal’ by many. However, if the body is unable to recover over a longer period of time, this has consequences: chronic fatigue, sleep disorders,
back pain, depressive moods or hormonal imbalances are often the first signs of a persistent dysregulation in the system.

From stress to exhaustion – the path to burnout
From stress to exhaustion – the path to burnout
When stress turns into burnout, it is no longer just a matter of stress, but of an advanced state of exhaustion.
A state in which physical, emotional and mental resources are simultaneously depleted and the system is unable to recover. At the Alpstein Clinic, we address these patterns with a holistic, systemic approach. We view the human being as a unity of body, mind, living environment and inner attitude, and we do not consider stress to be the sole cause, but rather an amplifier of complex stress processes.
How chronic stress changes the body
Through the autonomic nervous system, chronic stress affects numerous bodily systems:
the heart beats faster, sleep becomes shallower, digestion slows down and the immune system is diverted. A key marker for this regulation is
From chronic stress to systemic disorders
Chronic stress can also alter the intestinal flora, activate silent inflammation (i.e. subclinical inflammation)
and block hormonal control processes. These processes occur gradually and manifest themselves in symptoms such as:
- Lack of energy despite sleep
- Concentration problems and inner restlessness
- Muscle tension and a feeling of pressure in the head
- Irregular periods or lack of libido
- Digestive disorders or changes in appetite
- Irritability or social withdrawal

When the body can no longer switch off
The causes of chronic stress or burnout lie not only in your diary, but often deeper, for example in internalised beliefs, unresolved inner conflicts or social patterns. Many people function for years until their body suddenly slows them down. Systemic work and hypnotherapy often reveal that unconscious drivers such as ‘I mustn’t show weakness’ or ‘I have to please everyone’ permanently activate the stress axis. Previous attachment experiences, childhood influences and current relationship patterns can also keep the body in a state of constant tension, even during periods of rest.
Our approach: understanding stress – enabling regeneration
At the Alpstein Clinic, we don’t treat stress-related complaints and burnout symptoms with standard programmes, but with an individualised concept that takes a holistic view of the person – biologically, psychologically and systemically.
Our strength lies in combining state-of-the-art diagnostics with therapeutic depth.
For example, we use HRV measurement to assess the state of your autonomic nervous system, often detecting early signs of exhaustion or loss of regulation. This is supplemented by targeted laboratory analyses, for example to detect silent inflammation, micronutrient deficiencies or hormonal imbalances.
The path back to self-regulation
Building on this, we rely on effective but gentle procedures that calm the autonomic nervous system and promote regeneration.
Neural therapy
to release autonomic blockages.
Hypnotherapy
to uncover unconscious stress patterns.
Systemic conversations to make connections understandable
Biological medicine regulates inflammation and stabilises micronutrient balance
This combination provides more than just relief: it enables true recovery, meaning not only rest, but also the ability to regenerate. The goal is for the body and nervous system to relearn how to distinguish between tension and relaxation, allowing the individual to regain self-regulation.
